The Akoya pearl dates back to the early 20th century, coming from the seas around Japan. Due to its spherical shape and high lustre the Akoya pearl is typically thought of as the perfect pearl. These are the smallest saltwater pearls, and range in sizes from 2mm to 10mm. They are produced by a small oyster call Pinctada Fucata, and due to the small size of this oyster it is only able to produce 1-2 pearls at a time, thereby limiting the production of these highly desirable white pearls.
